The Secret Life of Caterpillars: A Magical Butterfly Transformation!
We have had some incredibly special, very wiggly visitors staying with us at the nursery recently. Two weeks ago, some caterpillars arrived, and we took on the very important job of looking after them.
Watching Them Grow... and Grow!
Day by day, the children watched as our tiny guests munched their way through their food. We carefully fed them every day, and before our eyes, they grew absolutely ginormous! We couldn’t quite believe just how big and furry they became.
After two weeks of non-stop snacking, the caterpillars climbed to the top of their jar and expertly spun themselves into hard, chrysalises (cocoons).
The Big Reveal
For the next week, the nursery was filled with quiet anticipation. We waited patiently, checking on them every morning. Then, the moment we had all been waiting for arrived...
Four beautiful Painted Lady butterflies emerged! To help our new winged friends build up their strength, the children carefully prepared some sweet sugar water and delicious fresh fruit. We waited until they were strong enough to take flight.

Flying Free into the Sunshine
When the big day arrived to release them, there was a little bit of sadness in the air—it is always hard to say goodbye to such lovely friends! However, we gathered together for a wonderful group circle time to talk about the next chapter of their journey. We discussed how happy the butterflies would be fluttering around in the warm sunshine, sipping sweet nectar, and doing the vital job of pollinating our garden plants.
We took them out to our outdoor area and watched in awe as they fluttered out of their net, landing gently on the bright flowers before soaring up into the sky. We all waved goodbye, incredibly proud to have helped them on their way!
